Understanding Crossfit

Understanding Crossfit

by Rod Bourgoine

Every few years, a new system of exercise is developed and becomes popular. These days the latest fitness option is known as CrossFit, and although it's been around since 2000, it has become exponentially popular in the last four or five years. Today, there are more than 6,000 gyms with CrossFit programs, and it is still one of the fastest growing exercise programs in the world.

There are several reasons why CrossFit has become so popular in the last decade. One reason is that the CrossFit system is highly intense, but relatively short in length. So you get a great workout in about 30-60 minutes or perhaps even less. This makes it very simple to fit a good and intense workout into your schedule several times during the week. Let's face it, these days finding time for fitness can be difficult, and CrossFit aims to make the process easier. In addition, CrossFit stresses total body workouts and includes not only aerobic exercises but also body weight techniques and weight lifting.

Each day's CrossFit routine is different from the day before, which tends to increase interest and enthusiasm for the program. In addition, the creators of CrossFit designed the program to increase your level of fitness in 10 different areas, so a myriad of exercises are taught in order to reach this goal of total body fitness. These areas include improving agility, flexibility, strength, stamina, power, balance, coordination, accuracy, cardiovascular fitness and respiratory fitness.

There are tons of different exercises involved in CrossFit. For example, some of the body weight exercises include handstand push-ups, box jumps, lunges, pull ups, rope climbing and sit-ups. Weight training includes deadlifts, work with kettlebells, squats, tire flips and many more exercises. Cardio training will include jumping rope, rowing and running among other activities. In this way, you can work every muscle group as well as improving your cardio strength and burning calories.

If you become a CrossFit expert, you might consider taking part in the annual CrossFit Games, which have been in existence since 2007 and include competitors from around the world. The prize money was once just $500, but has grown to more than $250,000, and there are categories for both women and men. There are also Masters categories for participants that are older than 40.

CrossFit is certainly an intense method of exercise, so before you sign up for classes, be sure to talk to your doctor or another health professional to make sure that you are ready for the challenges of CrossFit.
