Auto repair often seems like a complex subject, but it does not have to be so difficult. Teaching yourself about cars can really be useful in the future. Keep a good battery charger on hand at all times. Dead batteries are a common problem for many drivers. Additionally, having a charger with you will allow you to aid other motorists in similar need. Familiarize yourself with how the charger hooks up to your battery.

You absolutely need a good emergency kit inside your vehicle. This kit should contain a number of items, including tools, flares, a gas container and an emergency battery charger. In the event that your car were to break down in the middle of the night on a deserted road, bring blankets, batteries, and a flashlight.

If you notice your headlights do not shine as brightly as they used to, check to make sure they are clean. Sometimes there is a residue on the holset turbo that covers them from the streets and that can make them dirty so they cannot put out enough light. Use glass cleaner to clean them, and you will notice a big difference.

Get to know your owner's manual, or take the time to note important information. This will help you speak intelligently to a technician about your car when it is time to take it in. You might even find some easy solutions for the issues you have been encountering.

Be sure to change your oil often enough. You can put yourself in danger if you do not get your oil changed regularly. When your car does not get its oil changed on schedule, its life span can be shortened, so be sure that you remember the schedule.

Never leave any valuables in your car when it is getting repaired. Your personal items can get in the mechanics way, and they may have to move them. Empty the trunk too.

Warranties are very important when you get your car fixed, especially if you invest in expensive parts. Be sure and ask the mechanic what the warranty is on the parts that they have ordered. See how long that warranty lasts and get a printed copy of that contract to review it.

You shouldn't forget about your wiper blades. Replace them when they're not clearing the windshield well. Wiper blades should at least be changed yearly, and sometimes you need to do this more often.

Keep a DIY tool kit in your trunk. Your tool kit should have equipment to change a tire and other necessary items. Get a lug wrench or a jack. You should have a Phillips and flat head screwdriver and several types of wrenches. Always purchase quality tools. Instead, buy better quality, sturdy tools that will not break when you need them to repair something.

Know what the lights on the dashboard mean. Your dashboard lights warn you of potential problems. If you ignore them, you could end up with expensive problems down the road.

If you're experiencing a major problem with your brand new car, call the manufacturer immediately. There might be a recall issued for the vehicle or the manufacturer will consider issuing a recall if you are not the only person who complains. In the case of a recall, most manufacturers will pick up the cost of fixing it.

After you pay a mechanic and let them replace something on your vehicle, ask if you can get the old part back. If he refuses, it may be because the part was never replaced. This should be seen as a red flag and the person needs to be called out about it.

Check that your mechanic has all of the needed certifications. These certifications can make you feel comfortable when you are getting your repair. This usually means that they are qualified and knowledgeable and that you should receive good service.
