Some Thoughts Behind EMP Hardening

Some Thoughts Behind EMP Hardening

by Paulette Short

Have you ever stopped to consider how much of everyday life relies on electronics and technology. Most of these systems would be rendered useless in the event of an electromagnetic pulse affecting the area. This is why so many businesses are investing in protecting their systems by using something known as EMP hardening.

Your life would certainly be more difficult if these systems were not there as they normally would be. Imagine a scenario where one of these incidents had occurred while you were at work. You would naturally be worried about your family especially as the cell towers seem to be down and land line phones do not seen to work either. You decide that your only option is to return home and see that everything is okay.

The normal methods of controlling traffic will no longer be there. So along with everyone else worrying about their families there will be problems on the roads. With no traffic controls things will become a free for all and there will be plenty of accidents. These incidents will not be able to be reported to the emergency services as the cell phones will not work.

Even trying to get fuel for your car is going to be difficult as the fuel pumps will no longer work. Unless you are fortunate enough to know of a very old fashioned gas station who still hand pump their fuel. Even if you do know of such a gas station you should be prepared for long queues.. Tempers will be short as people slowly come to terms with how their lives have changed so drastically.

Even if you are able to get fuel you will struggle to pay unless you are using cash. The bank ATMs will all be offline so the only cash that you have is what you are carrying in your pocket. Once you arrive at your home your family will have been facing similar problems. Cash is the only means of buying groceries, and if the family car wasn't parked underground that will not get you to the store.

There will also be the difficulty faced with trying to find out what is happening. All television and radio stations will not be broadcasting, and there will be no internet. To find out anything about the situation people will have to rely on the military and civil administration.

Some people will naturally want to protect some of their own items. Many claim that an old microwave oven can help, and they store cell phones, transistor radios and radio handsets in them. There are different thoughts on whether this old microwave oven should be put to ground or not. The theory sounds logical, if microwaves can not escape then electromagnetic pulses also can not enter.

Thankfully businesses are now protecting their systems with EMP hardening. This process will automatically shut the systems down and take them offline to protect them. The benefit is that no data will have been lost, but everything has to be manually reset and brought back online which will take time. There is much to be said for living by the Scouting movement's motto of 'Be Prepared'.
