How To Finish Drywall Joints

How To Finish Drywall Joints

by Lori Philipps

Believe it or not, it is not easy for every homeowner to carry out a successful drywall finish. Having patience and constant practice is important, especially if you will be faced with large-scale repairs. However, having 3000 square feet of unfinished drywall panel is still an overwhelming task to finish, even for experts.

For those with respiratory conditions, it is best to wear a face mask when sanding to avoid inhaling dust. This is important since inhaled dust particles can cause serious health complications. You can use a damp cloth to wipe the accumulate dust during the process.

Invest in good taping knives and joint compound if you want to have a seamless drywall repair. Purchase taping knives of different sizes, since the mud application gets wider as you go along. Pre-mixed compounds are better than powdered forms to get the right consistency. Do not forget to mix the mud and a bit of water to loosen it up.

For drywall tapes, use a fiberglass mesh tape to cover the joints. This is a good taping material if you're a beginner since mesh tapes are self-adhesive. However, if you've got the skill in doing so, you can use paper tapes just like how the experts do it. Paper tapes should be handled carefully since you will be pressing it to the panel with a thin coating of mud.

Cover the top edge of the panel by applying a thin coating of drywall mud and feathering it out on the edges. A generous amount is not needed to avoid applying multiple layers of mud afterwards. Once the mud is dry, proceed with the bottom edge and the entire joint. Spread evenly.

Remove the bumps and remaining imperfections by lightly sanding the new piece of drywall. Only put a light pressure over the sanding block since the joint compound can be sanded easily. Once you have a smooth surface, swipe the panel clean, free of dust and dirt.

After sanding, apply at least two coats of primer to protect the paint from wearing off easily. Choose the exact paint color of your existing drywall to blend the new panel without difficulty. To avoid having brush marks on your drywall, use paint rollers instead of brushes.
