The Works Of Award Winning Authors

by Marcia Marks

Reading is a wonderful way to spend some free time. Many people now use their wireless tablet to download the latest books to read when they are travelling. It is always a good idea to look around for works by award winning authors. These can be in a huge variety of fields, from travel and politics to mystery and fiction.

The Pulitzer prize is awarded annually and in several categories. Recipients of the prize often find that all their work is now under scrutiny and they get a tremendous amount of publicity. Even to make it to the last three finalists is a huge honor that can help to get an author some much needed publicity.

With so many great works to choose from readers should decide which genre most interests them. Those who typically read the newspaper every day may like the investigative journalism of The Washington Post. This highly acclaimed publication has published many stories over the years that have rocked the nation and prompted social change. The Pulitzer Prize for journalism is a huge honor that is fought over by journalists every year. Past winners include Dana Priest, who wrote about the government handling of humanitarian issues.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg was the Medal winner in 1986. This beautiful story became an instant holiday classic that has delighted children for well over a decade. It proved so popular that an equally beautiful film version was made recently. This has also added to the appeal of the book and many thousands of children have fond memories of this book as their favorite bedtime story.

The adult authors compete for the Pulitzer prize. The past winners include Dana Priest in 2006 for her work in The Washington Post. She wrote a highly acclaimed report of the governments counter terrorism campaign and exposed many practices that drew criticism from many people. Such ground breaking journalism has helped to put the spot light on many important social and humanitarian issues.

Steinbeck's work helped to emphasize the plight of the lower working class people who had nothing and no one to fall back on. The lack of government support for these people became instrumental in forming social welfare programs throughout the country many of which are still in effect today.

One of the most loved books of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This 1961 winner tells the story of racial injustice and tensions in the south, but also of difficult family situations. There are so many threads running through the book that it is difficult to really say which is the main theme.

Ernest Hemingway is truly an American icon. Dashing and enigmatic he is one of the countries most famous award winning authors. Hemingway is the embodiment of the charismatic writer who really lived like a storybook hero. His book The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and remains popular today.
