A Geriatric Care Manager Handles Many Tasks

A Geriatric Care Manager Handles Many Tasks

by Jeannie Chapman

The term geriatric care manager is a broad phrase that can be used to describe a variety of individuals who work in the geriatric field. Also referred to as a GCM, such individuals help elderly patients to meet their long-term needs on a daily basis. They also help family members to cope with issues associated with caring for an aging parent or other loved one.

Those who work in the field mentioned above are typically familiar with specific disciplines such as health and human services, and provide assistance to family members who must care for aging loved ones. Many such individuals become certified through the NAPGCM, an organization that specializes in the training of those who work in this field. Such workers sometimes offer geriatric counseling and senior advocacy services as well. They also frequently intervene in times of crisis, isolating issues and offering solutions.

The majority of GCMs have a bachelor's degree in nursing, but some people working in this field may have also obtained a gerontology doctorate. They typically have education and training in more than one field with regard to healthcare. For example, they may have enrolled in training as a geriatric psychologist, social worker, gerontologist, or nurse.

A person can currently seek employment in this field as a manager without having to be licensed by the state or federal government. However, many employers prefer that their workers obtain the certification mentioned above. Naturally, these qualifications will vary significantly from one establishment to another.

Classes aimed at training those who are interested in such a career typically cover a variety of subjects. These include financial issues, psychology, general nursing, balanced aging, and elderly care management. Courses are available online or at traditional bricks and mortar universities or colleges. The option selected will primarily depend on the prospective student's personal preferences and budget.

A GCM can pursue employment at numerous establishments. These include assisted living facilities, government agencies, insurance companies, home health agencies, and long-term care facilities. The kind of establishment from which one seeks employment will depend on the facility's training requirements and the prospective worker's personal preferences. However, beginning one's own business in this field is also an option, although it can be a challenging endeavor. For this reason, each individual must carefully consider such aspects ahead of time.

Several aspects must be considered by those who want to seek employment in the aforementioned field. These include job duties, wages, and employment qualifications. For this reason, it is imperative for one to adequately research each online school or university before making a final decision. Otherwise, a person may spend time and money to obtain a degree or diploma that may be worthless in the eyes of a prospective employer. This is why it is best to choose an accredited school.

Ultimately, any individual who wants to start a career path as a geriatric care manager can anticipate a variety of options regarding employment opportunities. This is due to the fact that the general population is now living longer than ever, subsequently increasing the need for care of this type. Those who choose to seek such employment can expect steady work and good wages.
