Make Your Own Replacement Couch Cushions

Make Your Own Replacement Couch Cushions

by Dominique Burgoyne

You will probably find replacement couch cushions in most stores that sell furniture. If not, you can try in upholstery stores, or, of course, online. Another option is to find a good service that will replace your old cushions with new ones. If you would rather replace the foam or filling yourself, different types of fillers are available in most sewing and upholstery supply stores.

To make your cushion long lasting and very comfortable, you will need an appropriate filling. Cushion fillers are available in four basic types, and you should choose the right one according to your needs and preferences. Of course, you have to consider the purpose, and the frequency of usage. You should consider using the best possible fillers for your expensive living room couch.

The most common filler you will probably find in any specialized store is the sheet foam. You can choose lower or higher density, and different materials react differently when compressed. Although it can be cut to different sizes and shapes, this material is usually wrapped into a soft terylene. This way your cushion will have a softer shape and become more comfortable.

Back cushions can be filled with loose fiberfill alone. This type of synthetic material is the cheapest, but you have to keep in mind that it flattens easily, especially when exposed to frequent pressure. It is mildew resistant and easy to maintain, and doesn't cause allergic reaction on people prone to allergies. It can be easily combined with other materials to improve the density and durability, but if you use it alone, you need to fluff the cushion every once in a while.

A very good solution is using a foam inner core surrounded with loose fiberfill. This type of a cushion is encased in a fabric shell. It has good durability, mildew resistance and satisfying firmness. Besides, you can replace only the fiberfill after a few years, if it becomes necessary, for some reason, because the loose fiberfill flattens in time.

Expensive natural material such as down is just perfect for the most comfortable sitting you can imagine. It shapes to your body and have very good characteristics, including great durability. The down side is the price, as well as the fact this material is not hypoallergenic. But, if you aren't prone to allergies and possess beautiful, classic piece of furniture, this might be the best solution for you.

Most manufacturers offer at least ten densities to choose from. Foams can be cut to different shapes, including cylinders, triangles, squares and bolsters. Thinner, softer foams are cheaper, but they won't last very long. Thicker foams with better density may last for years, and you can combine them with loose filling to improve the softness, or with natural down.

There are numerous online stores specialized in selling just foams and fillers. Replacement couch cushions will really make a great difference. Your old couch can easily become comfortable and good looking again, without spending too much money for it. In any case, it is less expensive than buying a new one, especially if the old one is still in very good condition.
