Repairing Leaking Hot Water Today

Repairing Leaking Hot Water Today

by Brian Winters

Accepting the fact that your water heater cannot last forever is difficult until reality starts to kick in. It might be sitting on borrowed time once it malfunctions and stops producing hot water for your household. Inspect your water heater every six months to avoid inconvenience and recognize early signs of damage. Consider buying a replacement unit if your water heater is operating inefficiently for a long time.

Not all water heater leaks can be repaired. A tweak or two may do the trick, but serious leaking problems would require a replacement. To know if your water heater needs a repair or timely replacement, do not hesitate to contact a specialist. Trying to fix your water heater without professional help can cause the problem to escalate, resulting in a more expensive repair.

Prior to carrying out repairs, do not forget to turn off the circuit breaker or the gas supply valve of your water heater. Heating systems can convert into dangerous appliances if not handled properly. Do not put your life at risk and shut down the power and water supply of the unit. Mop the pool of water around your tank to avoid accidents.

Check your pipe fitting and plumbing connections for any signs of leaks. These connections should be tightened enough with a wrench to stop water from leaking. Ignoring loose pipe fittings can affect other parts of your unit, resulting in rust stains. Badly damaged pipes should be replaced as soon as possible. You can use a Teflon tape around the threading to stop water from leaking.

Locate the pressure relief valve around the side of the tank to detect possible signs of leaks. The T&P valve should be kept working at all times since it protects your heater from overheating and exploding. Avoid unnecessary disasters by replacing the relief valve as soon as it malfunctions.

You can test the T&P valve by lifting its handle while allowing water to flow out. Once you let it snap back on its own, water should have stopped draining. Ask help from a specialist to ensure proper relief valve installation. Do not use your water heater if you think you have a faulty valve. It helps lowering the temperature to prevent the pressure from building up.

Drain and flush your water heater for a thorough inspection. Connect a hose to the sillcock valve near the bottom of the tank. Open the valve and wait until the tank is empty. To remove the hard water minerals inside the tank, flush them out by turning on the cold water supply until the water runs clear.

It is safe to assume that your water heater is leaking from the bottom tank if the leaks are not coming from the areas stated above. At this point, you are left with no choice but to buy a replacement heater. The internal tank must have fully corroded, causing holes to appear. Call a specialist for professional help before it's too late.
