How Patient Education Handouts Can Help Prevent Disease

How Patient Education Handouts Can Help Prevent Disease

by Jaclyn Hurley

Most people in developed countries are lucky enough to have access to advanced medical services. New treatments and procedures are becoming available regularly and there are many diseases that used to be fatal but that can now be treated successfully. One of the biggest remaining problems is ignorance. Too many people still live unhealthy life styles or they do not seek medical help in time. This is where patient education handouts can play a very important role.

One of the main objectives of educational pamphlets is to prevent disease. They can inform the public about the causes of various diseases and the factors that will have a negative influence on their health. General information about matters such as safe sex, the dangers of tobacco and related topics can also help to persuade people to make positive changes in their lives.

Many people suffer from a variety of symptoms without realizing that they may have a disease. In this instance educational pamphlets can also play a very important role. If people are aware of which symptoms to look out for, they may seek medical help early enough for the disease to be diagnosed early. Of course, the earlier a disease is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat.

The abuse of medication is a serious headache for most health practitioners. People do not follow instructions and some people think nothing of even sharing their medication with others. In this field, too, educational pamphlets may prove to be valuable. People need to understand that the correct use of medication plays an important part in the maintenance of good health.

There are god reasons why health authorities focus on printed material rather than electronic media such as the internet. Many people simply do not have access to the internet and if they do, they are less inclined to visit the relevant website than they would be to read printed matter. Pamphlets are also advantageous because many people will keep them for future reference.

Those responsible for compiling medical pamphlets should be careful to consider the intended target group. Many people will not understand complicated words and technical terms. In some cases it is best to use as many graphics as is possible. It is also a good idea to supply readers with references to material that can provide more detailed information on the topic covered in the pamphlet.

There can be no doubt that the distribution of information about health issues should be a high priority for everybody involved in the health services. Informed people are more likely to make positive life style changes. Also, more people may seek medical help in time and this can lead to a more effective health system because disease will be diagnosed earlier and this increases the chances of success.

Information about important health matters should be made available everywhere. It is not just the general public that will benefit, but also the health services. An informed public is more likely to remain healthy and this can relieve the pressure on the already overburdened health system.
