Quick Fix: Patching Damaged Drywall

by Brian Winters

If you don't want your house to look shabby, repair drywall holes as soon as you notice them. As long as you're willing to practice to perfect your technique, patching drywall shouldn't be so difficult. For those who got their schedule all packed, consider hiring a specialist to take care of your drywall needs.

Prepare all the tools and materials needed to create perfect drywall patches. Use taping knives of different sizes to feather the edges evenly. Measure the hole before buying a patch to know what size you need to purchase. Make sure your spackling compound has the right consistency before using it.

Start removing the small pieces of drywall and torn paper edges around the damaged area. Cover the hole with a self-adhesive patch. This shouldn't be so difficult since all you need to do is press the tape evenly to minimize air pockets inside.

Grab your spackling compound and slather it over the compound. To fill all the mesh holes, a generous amount is needed. Feather the panel over the edges to blend it with your existing drywall. Avoid having a bumpy surface by applying more pressure on the edges when spreading the spackle evenly.

To know if the surface can already be sanded, buy a colored spackle that turns white when dry. This will make it easier to figure out if the compound is dry the whole way through. Leave the first coating dry for a couple of hours before you proceed. Sanding a wet panel is a waste of time-you may end up doing the process all over again.

Remember not to sand the panel too hard to avoid revealing the mesh patching. Once smooth, apply a coating of spackling compound over the entire panel and feather the edges out. Again, let it dry before sanding the remaining imperfections. You may have to wear a face mask to avoid inhaling dust particles while sanding.

Get your walls ready for painting by applying at least two coats of primer. As long as you take your time in feathering the edges, creating perfect patches should be easy. If you want to know how to patch drywall professionally, you can always contact a specialist to for more tips and advice.
