Some issues can be successfully resolved in four to twelve sessions, but you need to notice some progress much sooner. After the first few weeks your major problem should be recognized.

Therapists can have different types of formal education. Some of them specialized in psychology, social work or counseling, and some are psychiatrists, in other words medical doctors specialized in psychiatry. Your choice will depend on your particular problem, but you need to choose adequately educated person only, with at least master's level of education.

Licensed therapists are usually listed at your insurance company's website. If you cannot find everything you are looking for on their pages, send them an inquiry or call them personally. Make sure to contact your insurance company to find out if your mental health care benefits apply to this particular therapist. Sometimes you will have to pay a small part of expenses, and sometimes they will be covered completely.

You can also choose the treatment you prefer, and therapists specialized for this type of therapy. In fact, all therapist design their approaches depending on your personal issues and your character. There are different therapies for different issues. For example, cognitive treatments are very good for treating all types of depression. Behavioral therapy seems to be the best for treating anxiety.

Some therapists specialized different specific strategies in their work. One of those treatments is often hypnotherapy, for example. Creating mutual connection with your chosen Portland therapist is always more important than the method this person uses. Maybe individual approach suits you best, or you might prefer some forms of group therapy. As long as you feel comfortable and safe, you are on the right place.
