Should You Enroll Online Courses Or Traditional Classes At Graphic Design Schools?

by Gemilda V. Lovett

Anyone considering taking classes at graphic design schools in their town will have lots of decisions to make. The option to take an online degree or go the traditional route is perhaps the most vital you will make. Both options provide many benefits to students whether they are just graduating high school or returning students.

A traditional program consists of visiting on campus classes at graphic design schools as a daily basis for several years. Students of a on-campus program will attend several classes a day, interact in person with other students and their teachers and even participate in extracurricular activities. Traditional education has been around for thousands of years. The more recent online programs allow students to take their courses through the Internet, and submit assignments through a Dropbox or e-mail. Both educational plans can take about the same amount of effort to complete to get a degree.

Most students have opted for traditional schooling primarily because it was their best option for an excellent education. This was before the Internet when long distance courses meant sending homework in through the US Postal Service, talking to teachers via telephone conferences and watching lectures on television. It was easier for students to get their education by taking a traditional class in person where they could get immediate answers to their questions from teachers. Most traditional graphic design schools are also accredited colleges, so a degree from one of these institutions carried more weight with employers. Students also have the benefit of interacting with other classmates on campus and developing strong friendships and networks for the future.

Nowadays, the online graphic design schools can give students access to a helpful education that is as valuable as a traditional program. The graphic design programs through these online schools can now be accredited so the degree has the same weight as a traditional diploma. Online classes allow students to work whenever they wish, but still get almost instant responses from teachers and other students through e-mail and online chat. An Internet-based course can also be more affordable than traditional schooling via fewer fees and extraneous costs related to getting to school every day.

There are lots of benefits for each of these programs; both traditional schooling and online design programs. However, modern technology has made it possible to close the gap in learning quality between these two options. Students may still be more immersed in their degree program through the traditional route. Students in a traditional school environment can work along with other students and their teachers in person and even get immediate answers to questions as needed. However, the online programs also allow students plenty of flexibility and near instantaneous interaction with other students, and their teachers.
