Evaluating Your Options Before Choosing A Painting Contractor

Evaluating Your Options Before Choosing A Painting Contractor

by Aaron Stone

After you started your project, when was the last time you had a home cooked meal with your family? If you can't remember, then it's time to find someone who can help you shoulder some of the workload and who else would do a better job than a residential painting contractor? To find the right contractor that you can trust to take over for you in your absence, we have provided some clues to look for.

If your project is a remodel in the home you're currently living in, your pets could feel threatened by the residential painting contractors and work crew. Let the contractor know up front that you've got pets so that they and the work crew know to avoid them - and take precautions to keep your pets away from the work site.

Clarify the schedule and make it clear that how a particular work needs to be done and at what time. This written schedule will make sure that the job runs down smoothly within the period assigned between you and the residential painting contractor.

When checking references, don't just ask prior clients what they liked about the residential painting contractor. Ask about the negative aspects as well. It is important to get a good mix of information about a person you are hiring; what was unacceptable behavior to one client may be just fine to you.

Contracts for residential painting contractors can be very simple or very complex depending on the size of the job. Ask the contractor to take a copy of the contract with you and give you a few days to review it before signing anything.

Know your responsibilities as a client and your residential painting contractor's responsibility as manager of the work site. If extra tasks come up that weren't specified in the contract, such as furniture moving and fence removal, you will be responsible for accomplishing these tasks. A contractor may be willing to do it for an added fee, but if wasn't laid out in the contract, they are under no obligation to do so.

House-keeping is an important point to be discussed beforehand. The residential painting contractors should be aware that you expect them to clean up all the mess that they make during improvement. Of course, there might be some areas which have to be cleaned up by you.

As a thumb rule, allocate a minimum of 10% of the project value for unforeseen contingencies. If you are too rigid and not pay any additional money for additional work done, you might find yourself with an unfinished job on your hands. So you have to cut some slack and let the residential painting contractor breathe easy.
