Useful And Essential Facts About Thermal Transfer Ribbon

Useful And Essential Facts About Thermal Transfer Ribbon

by Barbara Stevens

In nearly all business types, labeling and printing is a hugely critical process. Specifically, labeling is handy in advertising and increasing the acceptance of a brand produced by a firm. Some of the factors that determine the durability of a label application include the print quality and how resistant the printed image is when it is exposed to chemicals, abrasion and sunlight.

For the label to be effective, wise choosing of the base material and the material that will be used in labeling is important. Among the perfect choices of material that can be used in labeling is the thermal transfer ribbon. There are several various types of ribbons and one should be very careful so that they can select the correct one. The ribbon that is selected should work perfectly with base material on which the application will be done.

Besides choosing the label material, it is also important to choose the right application method to use. In most cases, application is done using a special printer called a thermal transfer label printer. There are several brands of these printers on the market for one to pick from. They vary in many aspects such as size, power consumption, results produced, and affordability.

Individuals need to take time and study the different types of printers available in the market. Comparing a number of models prior to choosing one is very important. Individuals are supposed to make a comparison of a number of features contained in various printers and their respective prices. It is advised to go for a product that offers a good combination of price and features.

Secondly, one should consider the ribbon itself. Basically, thermal transfer vinyl ribbons in the market are grouped into three major types. These are resin, wax/resin, and wax ribbons. These three groups vary in several aspects such as the durability, cost, and the base material they can be used with. Therefore, they have their own cons and pros that a person should consider.

Similarly, within each type of ribbon, there are subtypes such as premium and economy ribbons. Regardless of the type of ribbon one settles for, printing on these ribbons is usually done using two major types of print heads, that is, near edge and flat-type print heads. Near edge print heads may also be referred to as true edge or corner edge print heads.

Of the three ribbon types, wax ribbons are the cheapest. This is accounted for by the fact that wax makes up the largest percentage of the substance that make them. They also mostly contain one layer of colorant. These ribbons can be printed at a temperature significantly lower since wax has a lower melting point when contrasted with resin.

Also, waxes are normally softer than resin. The image produced is usually affected by the softness such that the durability is lowered. The image is resistant to scratch, smudge, environmental resistance and chemicals too. These ribbons must not be coated on surfaces that will experience a lot of abrasion and physical contact. Wax ribbons are most appropriate for printing on matte, uncoated, and coated surfaces.
