Many of the states in the US also own several pieces of public land that the public is allowed to hunt on. Land under the ownership of the state exist in the form of Wildlife management areas and state forests among others. Local units of governments such as cities, counties, and even school districts also offer public hunting lands. Lastly, even privately owned lands are in some cases open to hunting by the public through special programs between the government and the owners.

Beyond parking area and trailheads, one may be required to walk the remaining distance to their hunting area. Horses and bicycles are other transport options.
