Are You Doing Proper Medical Billing?

Are You Doing Proper Medical Billing?

by Peter Pillers

Medical billing is a hot topic in 2016 and beyond. The main reason is because most people are asking themselves if it is worth it to be a stay at home medical biller. In reality, it is not easy to start your own home business. Most companies used outsourced medical billing services because they have more advanced software. Medical billing software companies will often try to get you to sign up for their software. They promise you training and the make a speech as to how easy it is to get clients. These types of businesses were receiving a crackdown by the FTC back in 2010. The main reason was because the majority of people buying this software could not find clients because the software was not industry standard.

Medical billing in general takes time to learn. If you have never been trained in billing software, it's important to take a course in it first. There are courses being taught at local universities at the bachelor and master's degree level. It is necessary to get your ICD-10 certification as well.

Yes, you have heard that medical billers get paid well. This is true. However, you must have years of experience and be familiar with the software. Each company is different. If a biller works in the dental field, they may not be a good biller for a cardiologist. The more experience someone has, the better they will be for their employer. It takes a person of strong will and mind to succeed. Getting your certification in ICD-10 is important today. ICD-10 came out on October 1, 2015. It has over 100,000 codes and many billers are reporting a slowdown of payments since it rolled out.

Most medical billing software today works with Windows. The billing process becomes easy and often automated. The more familiar someone is with the software, the easier it is for companies to see good progress in their billing. Make sure that the software that you buy can handle the longer codes that are being used in ICD-10. ICD-9 had shorted codes. There were only around 14,000 codes that were being used. Now there are over 100,000. That is a lot of codes and your software should be able to handle it. I recommend buying from a reputable software company that has had experience in this field for many years.

One of the most important jobs of a medical biller is to check on the benefits of the insured person. It is important to see what they are covered for. This is called a health care eligibility and benefit inquiry transaction. When you receive a response, it is called a health care eligibility and benefit response transaction. In order to do this, you need to have practice management software. Hopefully, this has given you a mini overview of medical billing software.
