Useful Guide On Texas Police Records Lookup

by Claire Dowell

Texas police reports or incidence reports as they are commonly called are available for public access although the information that would be available is those of the initial reports. All the rest of the information will be withheld from the public until the case receives conviction. The public information copy of a police report is available from the open records division of the county where the case was reported.

The State mandates that all government offices provide the reports requested by the public. With that said, each county, city or town has their own guide to ensure the smooth flow of the transaction. All require the submission of a written request stating the needed report as well as the person requesting it. As the office can only send the reports via mail, the person requesting the report would have to provide a mailing address where the generated report will be sent. A person can request the report via email, fax or in person. Payment for the reports depends on the fees collected by the particular location.

For people who want to look for the records themselves, they may do so by visiting the Records Division in person. The person requesting should include all pertinent details of the case to make the search faster. One must specify that the records they want is for public information only as not indicating this especially for ongoing cases will cause the request to be sent to the Office of the Attorney General for clearance. The processing for such request would then take about two months.

For those who want to request reports in El Paso, Texas, the Records Division is open from 6 am until 12 midnight. The office is open seven days a week to accommodate all requests. Each page of the report costs about $.10 and this is good for 50 pages, in excess of which additional fees may be added by the Office. One can pay by cash, check or money order.

For Texas City, police reports are made available from the Texas City Criminal records and Identification Division. Fees for basic public information offense report are about $4 as well as accident and background or arrest report. Provide the case or incident report number as well as the parties involved. Page one or public release reports are available and can be ordered directly in person from the Records Division. The report contains basic information on the case. Requests for full report depend on the status of the case and might not be available for the public.

Just like in Texas City or any other city in the United States, where all reports criminal in nature or those that involve a minor or no arrest has been made, the city of Austin also can only provide basic information about the case. The report cost about $10, available from the Austin Main police headquarters, and is accessible from the internet. Some police reports online are also available free from other public record websites.
