Using Glass For Spectacular Interior Design

Using Glass For Spectacular Interior Design

by Henrietta Pym

You have likely heard the old saying. "A Jack of all trades is a master of none", they say. But being versatile does not necessarily equal being limited. Anyone who works with glass can vouch for its wide variety of uses in construction and interior design. Glass is a material that straddles the line between form and functionality, and if you use it creatively, it can give a sleek, modern look to a home. And there is enough range of choices to find pieces that fit into almost any design scheme. In this article, we will look at just a few ways you can use glass in your home.

Glass Tiles: Of all of the uses of glass, the most common you will likely find is tiling. In the recent past, glass tiles have really taken off. More and more people are recognizing the advantages they have over ceramic tiles. They are usually easier to install, they come in more colors, and they are naturally resistant to moisture. With the patterns and colors available, you likely will not even miss ceramic tiles.

Railings: You would commonly find glass and metal railings on the staircases and upper levels of office buildings. Those designs do not have to be limited to places of business, however, and smart use of glass can be add a unique flair to the upper levels of your home. Metal and glass can be a little too cold for some people's taste, though. In those cases, they may instead choose to use colored plastic or finished wood for the framing.

Glass Table Tops: Many homes of various styles contain tables with glass surfaces, whether they be full-size tables in a dining room or coffee tables in the living room. These types of tables often make the room appear more spacious. You can also use glass tops to protect wood and stone surfaces.

Glass Doors: Sliding glass patio doors and frosted shower enclosures are not uncommon in contemporary homes, but you are less likely to find glass doors in the interior doorways. They lend a unique, sophisticated appearance. They can be a simple frosted pane in a wooden or metal frame, or, for something really unique, they can be a single rectangular pane hanging from a sliding track above the doorway. Some sort of texture or pattern is usually applied to make sure the door is not completely transparent. Doors like these can really take an ultra-modern design scheme to the next level.

Art: Glass blowing has been around since before the first century, and it has remained a relevant and beautiful art ever since. Glass containers and structures can be great decorations for any home. No matter the style, you can likely find glass art pieces that fit with the theme. A limitless number of colors, patterns and shapes of glass vessels can be made. For something a little different, you might choose to install colored glass panes, mosaic images or panes with printed images on top.

If used properly, glass designs can affordable, long-lasting and eco-friendly. Have you examined some of the options available and thought about how you can use glass in your home?
