Home Foundations And Safety

Home Foundations And Safety

by Franklin Vickers

The word foundation describes the very root of something; anchor from which every other part of the structure or ideology is supported by. This is a very apt description for the literal foundation of a home or building. Every other part of the structure relies on it for support. Without it, the changing conditions of the land would create instability that would weaken the structure until it reached the point of an eventual collapse. But if the foundation itself is not as stable as it should be, it can create problems that extend to the entire home.

Making sure your home's foundation is up to standard and kept in good repair is vital to protecting the investment you made when you bought it. A bad foundation can cause endless headaches for a home owner. The effects can be noticed all over the house.

If your home is suffering from a bad or failing foundation, it will likely exhibit a number of symptoms, including: cracks in hard floors, walls and surfaces inside and outside of the home, windows or doors that do not align or shut properly, water leakage in the basement, and the tilting of walls or features, such as chimneys. If you suspect your foundation is failing, it should be inspected as soon as possible.

There are certain reasons that foundations fail. The most common is due to soil instability. Various factors, such as moisture absorption, or improper steps taken during initial construction phases, can create voids in the soil. These voids create inconsistencies in the leveling and stability of the soil that the foundation rests on. The soil shifts cause the foundation to shift, which, in turn, causes stress to the above-ground structure of the home. Once this process progresses and gets bad enough, the home will be unable to take it and will begin to release the tension by cracking.

Once you have identified the problem, it is time to find the solution. With a foundation, the sooner it gets fixed, the better, since leaving it to its own devices will only worsen the problem. Foundation problems are too complex and risky for the average Do-It-Yourselfer to tackle on their own, so you will need to track down a competent and trustworthy contractor. But you may still be wondering about what exactly the process of foundation repair will involve.

The most effective method of stabilizing the foundation of an existing structure is through a process called underpinning. This entails using various types of piles or piers to compensate for the weaknesses of the soil. The type of pier used for the job depends on the soil conditions and current integrity of the existing foundation. A more stable, consistent foundation takes the load off of the structure of the home, quite literally.

It would be unwise to ignore the importance of keeping your foundation in good repair. The longer you wait to deal foundational problems, the more damage they can cause, and the more dangerous it is for those living in the home.
