Things To Know About The Tubal Reversal Procedure

Things To Know About The Tubal Reversal Procedure

by Cindy Jing

Female sterilization is a birth control procedure that is meant to prevent pregnancy permanently. However, some women who undergo this procedure regret their decision later and wish to bear another child. In this case, they can opt for tubal reversal or tubal reanastomosis surgery. This surgical procedure is done to untie, reopen or reconnect the fallopian tubes of women who have undergone female sterilization.

Most women who opt for tubal reanastomosis are those who are younger than thirty years of age, those who were pressurized into undergoing the procedure and the women who underwent the procedure when they were facing marital problems. Female sterilization reversal is most effective in women who have not attained the age of 35 and their fallopian tubes suffered minimal damage during a sterilization procedure. If the fallopian tubes were blocked using rings or clamps, untying and reconnecting them is easier.

Pregnancy rates following tubal ligation reversal surgery vary between 40 and 85 percent. The factors that determine these rates include the age of the woman at the time of the surgery, the kind of female sterilization procedure that was performed, the skill level of the surgeon and whether the fallopian tubes are still functional. Patients who undergo this surgical procedure have an increased risk of having an ectopic pregnancy.

Before tubal ligation reversal surgery, healthcare providers recommend that patients complete a physical exam to determine if they can become pregnant after undergoing the procedure. This usually includes imaging and blood tests to find out if the ovaries are working normally. Women also required to undergo a hysterosalpinogram. This test checks the length and function of their remaining fallopian tubes. Their male partners are asked to undergo a semen analysis and sperm count test to rule out infertility problems.

Patients are usually placed under anesthesia during the surgical procedure. A surgeon then utilizes a laparoscope that has microscopic devices attached to it to view the fallopian tubes. This specialist then reopens the tubes by removing the clips or rings that were used to tie them. After this, the surgeon reconnects the fallopian tubes with the uterus by using small stitches.

Most surgeons take two to three hours to complete a tubal reanastomosis procedure. This procedure is more complex than the female sterilization procedure. You may be asked to stay overnight in the hospital or one to three days if it is necessary. You will be asked to undergo an X ray dye test about 3 months after the ligation reversal procedure to determine if the procedure was successful and if your fallopian tubes are functioning normally.

The recovery time usually depends of the surgical method that was used to perform the procedure. If the procedure was performed using microsurgical techniques, a patient can go home on the same day. Patients are usually ready to go home 2 to 4 hours under the procedure is complete. Doctors prescribe pain relievers to help patients manage any discomfort.

Most women are able to live normally again after a period of about two weeks. They are also able to conceive after a period of six months to a year after the procedure. Reversing the female sterilization procedure can be costly and most insurers do not offer coverage for it. However, most couples find it affordable.
