Forget Spring Cleaning - Design Your Home For Year-Round Cleanliness

Forget Spring Cleaning - Design Your Home For Year-Round Cleanliness

by Vickie Daeley

As we transition out of winter and into to spring, this is the time of year we think about spring cleaning. While giving everything in your home a thorough cleaning and assessing your items is always a good idea, what if you home always looked as though it were fresh from a spring clean? With the help of a great interior designer, this dream can become a reality.

Getting organized is a chore, but it can happen. However, staying organized is the real challenge. After all, clutter seems to build up like magic. We are inundated with "stuff" just about every day and it's easy to become overwhelmed. This is particularly true if our home is not set up with solid organizational systems. Create a few concrete rules for yourself, though, and it can be much easier to reduce the clutter in your home.

One great rule is the "one thing in, one thing out" rule. This simply means that when we purchase something new, we also get rid of something old. If you bought a new pair of shoes, get rid of one (or two) pairs that we no longer want. If you purchase a new vase, get rid of an old one. If you buy a new set of dishes, get rid of a set you no longer want. This works with just about any type of item in your house, even something big like a bed or a sofa. If you purchase a new couch, call up a consignment shop or a charity store and have them come and get the old one immediately.

For many of us, it's the paper clutter that really gets us down. Maybe we are great at purging old clothes and shoes, but have boxes filled with old bills, magazines and school reports or kid artwork. There are easy ways to begin to reduce this type of clutter, as well. Many documents can be scanned and stored on your computer or you can purchase an external hard drive for document storage. You might not want to toss the artwork your children create but rather than store it all, take pictures of it or scan it and put it on your computer. Get digital subscriptions to your favorite newspapers and magazines or at least give away old copies of magazines as soon as you have read them. Many of our bills can be sent via email and then you can pay these bills online, which further reduces clutter.

Of course, there are many items that we cannot throw away, but we also don't simply want them crammed into closets, sitting on countertops or hidden in the garage. This is where a designer comes in. This trained professional not only is capable of making your living spaces beautiful, they can transform your home into a storage Mecca. A designer can redo your closets, create attractive shelving units and come up with other clever ideas for storage.

Once your storage problems have been fixed and everything has a proper place, your home will truly look clean. You will be able to find all of your important papers and other items quickly. When friends pop over, it will take just minutes to tidy up and you won't have to cram it all into a hall closet or an extra bedroom. Your home should be a respite, and if it's organized, you will always feel relaxed the minute you come home after a hard day at work. So instead of struggling with the momentous task of spring cleaning, contact a designer and have them create an organizational system that works for you.
