Social events of all types should be about the people but some feel it is about the entertainment or the food that is served. The event could be related to work or just a simple gathering of friends and family but ensuring that the day will bring a surprise or two is priority as far as the person planning the event is concerned. Treats like baklava are one of those things that are certain to turn heads as it is considered an international pastry.

Originally from Greece, treat has a combination of nuts, dried fruits, and spices that are wrapped and baked inside layers of buttered phyllo dough. Though the texture is crisp, these are more portable than cupcakes and unlike ice cream, can withstand room temperature without spoilage. Since the ingredients are mostly dry, they can also be taken on long road trips or other events that are not formal.

While there are many recipes for this Greek dish, some may find that their local bakery has these in many flavors, such as hazelnut, pistachio, and walnut. Some bakeries use dried fruits like dates along with an abundance of spices that include cinnamon, clove, and vanilla. These treats would not have their sticky consistency without the use of real honey or sugar syrup.

Attendees may find another popular dish that is not exactly new but now, there are many unique spins on this classic that are easy for anyone to make. Not only are meatballs economical and fun, but they are no longer limited to pasta dishes and sandwiches. There are now recipes that use other meats besides beef or pork.

Meatballs on a skewer or toothpick with vegetables and sauce were once a hit at parties. A number of Greek meatball recipes that make a nice companion to this dessert. By adding ingredients like jalapeno and mint, guests will have quite a surprise with these unusual tastes. While many of these traditional recipes use lamb, chicken or turkey may be a low fat substitute.

There are similar appetizers of Greek origin that anyone can try out such as spinach and feta cheese bake, dolamathes, or the traditional stuffed grape leaves. These are full of flavor and bound to get people talking as it may have been unexpected. One great thing is these are economical as well as easy to make.

Sometimes when people are planning an event, it can be hard to determine whether it is best to play things safe or step out of the norm. When in doubt, a person can do a few things so they will not chance offending their guests. The first is to find out what has been a hit for years and the second is to choose a place that has a great reputation and prides itself on serving quality.

However, most people will be there to enjoy themselves, as everything at the serving table should be fun and flavorful. Although it is near impossible to please everyone, anything with a nice arrangement should be enough to pique the curiosity of the hungry guest. These are just some of the things to think about when planning a social event.
