Making An Abstract Watercolor Painting

Making An Abstract Watercolor Painting

by Lana Bray

When one is into abstract watercolor painting, he can observe that these types of paintings will have a different effect as compared to other types of paintings. Take note that artists make use of special methods that can create a somewhat 3D effect that other pictures do not have. So for those who are new to this field of painting, here is a guide on how to create special effects on the canvas.

Now when it comes to art work, it is extremely important to have all of the right materials and equipment. The first thing that one will be needing will be some heavy paper that is suited for the purpose of doing watercolor portraits. The great thing about this kind of paper is that it can actually hold a lot of paint and water at the same time.

Once he has gotten the paper, then he would need to get a card board where he can stick the paper on. When he has already placed the paper on the board, then he can already spray a little bit of water on the paper and wait for it to dry. Making it damp is extremely important so that the water will be able to make the paint more durable.

So when all the preparations have already been done, one may now work on the paint that he will be using. Now take note that before applying any paint to the canvas, one must first mix the paints with some water. One technique that a lot of artists use when applying paint on to the canvas would be to put some extra water over the paint so that it can drip down and make it more alive.

During this stage, the artist must have already thought of what he would want to put into the canvas. After that, one should now put some salt crystals into the wet paint and let the mix absorb the salt into the paper in order to give the picture a more crystal effect. If there are any excess salt residues on the canvas, just brush them off later on.

After the painting has dried up, one should now put a plastic cover or plastic bag over the canvas and let it stick to the paint. This will help spread the paint around and create a whole new dimension and effect. So put the plastic over the canvas and wait for the paint to dry.

When one has already taken out the plastic covering, take a small toothbrush and put some wet paint on it. From there, he should now paint another layer on the paper so that it can create a 3D effect. In order to have a layered effect, artists should never ever skip this step.

So basically, that is how to make abstract watercolor painting effects that look beautiful. Take note that the artist may keep on repeating the last two steps until he is satisfied with the quality of shapes and colors. Of course the number of times he will repeat this will depend on his own taste preference.
