Unfortunately, Elder Financial Abuse Is Often Overlooked

Unfortunately, Elder Financial Abuse Is Often Overlooked

by Timothy Stevens

In an ideal situation, people assume that elderly ill-treat is being impolite or neglecting the seniors. It is unfortunate that some individuals will go into the extent of physically abusing the aged in our society. Unimaginable acts are currently happening in our community with many going unnoticed, such as elder financial abuse.

The state of getting aged means you are vulnerable. That is being unable to do no more of things that you used to. Hence, your care and protection become the obligation of others. When in this condition, you are forced to entrust the caregiver or family members with your finances. Unfortunately, the people meant to care, end up using your funds without your knowledge.

There are several ways that an elderly can be exploited financially. Assuming a scenario where the aged places their trust on a person and gives them partial accessibility of their funds. The chances are high that the specific individual will channel the finances to their matters at the expense of the senior. Many are times when the abuser believes that no one will notice their malice actions. For this reason, have your aged person sensitized to have more than one person accessing their accounts. The elderly must also monitor their spending.

Some family members perceive the opportunity when their wealthy parents age. They seek for any possible opportunity to earn from the senior in case death strikes. Thus, they will lure them into assigning them some of their property or even come up with spending ideals which will lead to them financially exploiting the elderly. It is vital all members of the family keep an eye to any susceptible behaviors and have them tamed before they result in their aged being abused.

Even though caregivers are considered as trusted experts who protect the aged, you should be cautious when engaging their services. Some care providers take advantage of the same seniors they should be caring for. Hence to seal any loopholes that may lead to financial exploitation, strive to change the service provider regularly.

You must employ precautionary measures to make sure the caregiver does not ill-treat your aged person. Keep reshuffling the protectors, and you will avoid a scenario where they would feel comfortable or master all the openings that may lead to exploitation. Strive to care for your aged parents even if most of the time, you are not physically around them.

Note, the members of the family, care providers and other close friends are the most reported abusers in most of the cases inclined to senior exploitation. Hence, your aged parents will be abused by persons familiar to them. Given they get disoriented as age catches up, the abuser sees this as a chance to exploit them financially. The good thing is, if you are vigilant you will notice some possibilities of exploitation and take necessary actions.

Following their state, a senior may realize they have been abused but are extremely frightened to pursue legal action on their own. Thus, if you get to know for a fact the elderly has been exploited, get them a qualified lawyer. It is possible for the victim to get back their lost property and funds. Remember, the attorney will intervene and bring to book those involved in this abusive act. Sadly, many cases happen at homes, in senior facilities and are never noticed.
