Questions That Safety Culture Assessments Must Answer

Questions That Safety Culture Assessments Must Answer

by Daniel Hall

A safe working environment is healthier and more productive. It will also provide excellent return on investment because there are fewer disruptions and compensation claims. It is impossible to achieve absolute safety in any environment. This is why experts recommend continuous safety culture assessments. What are the parameters and expectations from such exercises?

What commitment has the management made to maintain safety? The level of commitment is shown by the position of the commander of safety affairs. The seniority of this manager determines the speed with which action is taken in case an issue arises. It also shows the priority level for the company. It must be known that nothing can proceed profitably in any organization until the people around feel safe.

Communication protocol for the organization on safe environments and risks is also assessed. The safest organizations have a clear line of communication between the lowest and highest members. What information flows between employees and management and how does this information flow. Action on risks depends on this communication protocol. People need to feel free to communicate their concerns whenever they do not feel safe. It makes it easier to deal with the risks.

Whose responsibility is it to keep the workplace safe? This can also be viewed from the angle of involvement of all persons in keeping your environment as safe as possible. It must not be the responsibility of employees. There is need for mutual and collective responsibility. It will be disastrous if employees look upon their bosses while the bosses wait upon employees.

Training and information focuses on whether employees feel confident about the training they have received on safety in their environment. Do they know the dangers they are exposed to and the actions they can take in case danger strikes? What is the perception of employees and management towards continued training and availability of this information? Have safety measures been put in place to give confidence to everyone that he or she will be safe in case of a mishap?

What motivates the people to remain safe or take necessary measures? There are instances where measures taken are because of the authority of seniors. The safest environment is where everyone is motivated by the need to keep the environment and every other person in the environment safe. Beyond keeping their workplace safe, they will enjoy working there and thus be more productive.

Is there effort made by an organization to comply with existing laws? These laws are deeply considered and apply to situations uniquely. The organization must show awareness, discipline and commitment to provide a safe place for people, property and surrounding environment. There should be established standard procedures in case of a mishap. You should also provide enough, relevant and updated information to people in the area.

Is there evidence that the organization and its people are learning from previous mishaps? This is the best way to keep the place safe. Issues that were identified as the causes of previous disasters must be isolated and rectified. The aim is to consistently reduce damage. Assessment will be futile if there is no improvement over the years.
