How To Do Wet Tapping

How To Do Wet Tapping

by Sarah Wallace

Water usually moves to various destinations in conduits. These conduits at times need a diversion to other places from the main channel. The main channel should always be left in good condition. There are machines manufactured to make this procedure very easy to go about. They cut into the main channel without losing the flowing liquid. Wet tapping is mainly done to divert sewage and water channels.

The major requirement for the change to take place is a sleeve. The valve is connected to the sleeve while cutting into the main channel to change the direction. After joining the valve to the sleeve, the machine is connected to the valve. While conducting the cutting exercise, the machine goes beyond the valve with the help of an extendable beam. This helps the machine go beyond the sleeve.

A cutter and drill bit are connected to the crank. The function of the cutter is to incise the main channel and make the joining section for the new conduit. The drill bit has an inbuilt mechanism that holds the remains of the incision. Once withdrawn, these parts come off with the machine. Upon removal, the valve gets closed as the machine is withdrawn. This is the case when everything has been done according to the procedure. Despite that, there are chances of things going wrong.

Workers who have limited experience in drilling and working on material that is not recommended for the procedure are the major reasons for failure. However, the most common reason is using material that is incompatible with the given technique. In order to change the probability of the latter occurring, hiring the same technician is the best option especially for bigger conduits.

Wet taps are commonly done in commercial and residential areas. They allow tie-ins to the existing system. This can be done either for permanent or temporary basis. These are for the line plugging stage. They allow customers to transform, maintain or even repair the pressurized systems. This is by enabling minimal interruption of the system using this service.

A good number of materials used for piping cannot be tapped. The materials that allow this procedure are made from carbon steel, ductile iron and cast iron. The other materials cannot be welded. This gives a reason for an additional procedure to be used in order to make a diversion. A bolt-on fitting perfectly solves this hitch. The fittings will, therefore, be used to make the diversion.

Conventionally, sewage and water are the main liquids that are diverted. While carrying out the procedure, one should be keen not to let them escape the main channel. This should be the case since there are people who live or trade where the diversions take place. Technical hitches could potentially flood or pollute the environment.

The main advantage of the procedure is that there are no volatile materials being transported in the pipes. In the case of an accident, the damage is limited. A machine referred to as Hydro-tapper is flexible and offers above standard performance on pipes with a range of diameters. It has an inbuilt hydraulic drive.
