Chimneys are types of structures that are providing a proper ventilation for smoke and flue gases that are coming from stoves, fireplaces, boilers, or furnaces towards the outside atmosphere. Typically, these are positioned vertically for ensuring that gases are flowing smoothly upwards. A flue is the space inside the chimney. Chimneys are often found in steam locomotives, ships, and buildings.

Burning fires that may come out from chimneys can sometimes be difficult to avoid. These may cause fire because of some substances like soot and creosote which are flammable and sticky. Doing a chimney cleaning Windsor Locks CT may be done if you will be hiring a professional to do the job, but this may cost you much. So here are some simple steps that you can follow to do a safe cleaning by yourself.

The following steps are to be done in 4 methods. First preparing to clean the chimneys. Before you start, you must have to determine if the chimney will be needing the cleaning process. It would be important that the chimney is cleaned once a year. If these are used more frequently, to clean it often is needed. Also try to check some animals living in it sine at times, you may not check it for a while.

Next is to measure the flue. When you do the method for cleaning, be sure to use the appropriate tools and be sure that these tools have sizes that would fit in the flue. Measuring all the sides from the fireplace or the bottom part is important, then after, by the use of a ladder, climb up to measure the top. All necessary supplies can be purchased from a nearby hardware store.

You must also dress appropriately. You may use your old clothes so that you will not mind on getting messy because of the soot. A bandanna can be used for covering the hair. Use gloves for protecting the hands and goggles for the eyes. Place the drop cloth or the plastic tarp on the floor to avoid the house from getting dirty. Look for the damper then clean it with the brush.

Second is cleaning first the top and to the bottom. Get a ladder to climb up unto the roof. The ladder may also be set up outside the home when climbing unto your roof, but just make sure that it is safe. Next is assembling the brush and the pipe section for flue scrubbing. There are several sections available that can be added into the pipe to make the brush longer.

Third is cleaning from bottom to the top. The same steps will apply when using pipe sections and a brush for flue scrubbing. Then after those steps, clean from bottom then to the top by the use of a pulley system together with brush. Place the pulley on top of the roof.

In this step, it might be helpful if you are going to hire someone for holding one side if the rope from the roof then the other side will be dropped. At the center of a pulley is the brush. Then work with your partner together by pulling that pulley rope in an up and down manner. It works by scrubbing the brush in chimney flue.

The fourth and last method involves cleaning the entrance of the flue by making use of a spade and a shovel. After this, reattach then the damper. Debris in the drop cloth or plastic tarp should be cleaned using dustpan and broom.
