Some Facts On Lap Band Surgery Houston Clients Need To Know Of

Surgery is now widely accepted as an effective method of losing weight. There are several types of bariatric operations that are performed all over the world. Lap band surgery is among those that provide the most satisfactory results. Generally, people who sign up for these procedures are those that have attempted using other techniques (such as lifestyle modification) but have been unsuccessful. There are some important things on Lap band surgery Houston obese patients need to know.

Bariatric surgeries can also be called restrictive operations due to the way in which they achieve their effect. A reduction in the size of stomach means that less food is eaten in any single sitting. You will start to experience faster filling than before as well as early satiety hence the desire for more food reduces. Most of the food that one eats will be utilized in the provision of energy with very little being stored.

Before you are scheduled to undergo this procedure, the doctor will have to evaluate you. Part of this evaluation includes taking your medical history and subjecting you to a physical examination. The procedure is likely to be useful in persons whose body mass index is at least 40. Exceptions include potential candidates that are already struggling with weight-related complications such as sleep apnea and hypertension.

The surgery is performed by placing a silicon band on one part of the stomach (usually the upper portion). The compression caused by this band markedly reduces the size of the stomach such that only a small amount of eaten food can be held at a given point in time. This is usually done laparoscopically (uses an instrument known as a laparoscope). Three ports of entry have to be created on the abdomen to facilitate its entry.

Banding may also be done using the open technique but many patients appear to prefer the laparoscopic option. Among the factors contributing to this is the use of very small incisions in the laparoscopic option. Due to the small incisions, the risk of complications such as bleeding, injury to other organs and infections is reduced. Patients with these scars enjoy a quicker recovery and can return to their normal routines in 48 hours.

Perhaps the biggest advantage associated with this surgery over other types of bariatric surgeries is that it can be reversed easily. Reversal may be needed in the event of severe complications. Similarly, adjustments can be made easily if the desired results are not achieved. A plastic tube that is continuous with the band is used in making the desired adjustments. This is done by filling it with saline or emptying it.

In general, this procedure, is considered safe. This does not mean that there are not potential complications. During the operation, excessive bleeding and injury to other structures may occur. Fortunately, the use of laparoscopy has markedly reduced this risk. Other complications that may be encountered are nausea and vomiting and these mainly result due to excessive pressure by the silicone band. Reducing this pressure reduces symptom severity.

This operation is usually conducted as a day case in most places. This means that a patient will be typically released from hospital on the same day that they undergo the procedure. Light diet is usually recommended for about two weeks before one resumes on their regular diet. Weight loss will become evident after weeks to months. The average patient will lose between 40 and 50% of their weight after about 6 months.
