There are many methods that are used to apply coatings onto surfaces. Powder coating is one such method. This method employs free-flowing, dry powders without a solvent medium. In most cases, these powders have particles that range in size between 30 and 50 microns and have a softening temperature of about 80 degrees Celsius. Melting temperature is mostly placed at 150 degree Celsius while curing is done at a temperature of 200 degree Celsius. After application, curing must be done for between 10 and 15 minutes depending on the thickness of the coating applied.

To achieve a film of good smoothness, coatings are often applied to build-ups of over 50 microns. Many manufacturers prefer a certain level of orange peel because it hides defects in metals. Metal defects occur during manufacture. Showing of fingerprints is also prevented by incorporation of a certain level of orange peel.

Thermoplastics and thermosets are the two main forms of powders used in this process. The powders are usually more suited for applying on metal components like aluminum extrusions, bicycle and motor components, drum hardware, and household appliances. Non-metallic surfaces can also be coated as a result of technological advancements. Medium-density fiberboard is one example of non-metallic materials that can be coated using this method.

The thermoset variety consists of a cross-linker in its formulation. During the baking process, chemical compounds in the powder react with each other to polymerize. The polymerization process improves the performance properties of the compound. The same reaction does not occur in the thermoplastic variety. Instead, the product just flows out into the final coat.
