Flag Of Arkansas
The battleship U.S.S. Arkansas was to be commissioned and the Pine Bluff chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution voted to present an Arkansas State Flag to the ship. The committee dutifully sent a letter off to Secretary of State Earl W. Hodges to learn more about the flag. They received a reply to their letter explaining that Arkansas had no state flag.
The Pine Bluff Daughters chose that this circumstance must be amended and supported a statewide banner contest. Secretary of State, Hodges led the board of trustees to choose the banner plan.
The DAR chapter thereupon launched a statewide design contest to create one. Hodges agreed to chair a committee for selecting the winning design. Ultimately, some sixty-five designs-including crayon drawings, watercolor sketches, and even miniature silk flags were submitted.
The design depicted a large white diamond bordered by twenty-five stars on a blue band. A straight line of three blue stars was centered in the diamond. The flag committee thought the state's name should be on the flag. Miss Hocker agreed and suggested that the blue stars be re-arranged with one star above the name and two below.
Along these lines, in 1924, the Arkansas Legislature tended to the configuration of the state hail once more. The first three stars were moved beneath the state name and the extra star was focused over the state name. This is the way the flag is today.
The committee decreed that the flag ought to bear the state's name. Hocker assented and suggested that the three blue stars be rearranged, one above the name and two below. On February 26, 1913, the General Assembly adopted this design as the state's official flag. The design remained unchanged until 1923 when the General Assembly added a fourth star to the central diamond to represent Arkansas's membership in the Confederate States of America.
