Prepping Advice Regarding Propane Tanks & Propane Tank Prices

Prepping Advice Regarding Propane Tanks & Propane Tank Prices

by Cath Buhr

Whether you are a dedicated prepper or just someone who sees the value of preparing for any type of natural disaster or manmade calamity, propane can be an excellent source of fuel to consider using. While you might be worried about the propane tank prices as well as propane prices in general, there are plenty of ways to keep your costs down.

Propane is an ideal option for preppers as well as those who are seeking a more off-the-grid lifestyle. Unlike electricity and natural gas, you can stockpile your propane, which is a huge advantage. You can, of course, use batteries to store up energy harnessed from solar panels and wind turbines, and you might consider doing all three to ensure that you always have plenty of energy.

One of your first considerations prior to buying propane is to search for propane tanks for sale. Propane tank prices vary by size and whether they are new or refurbished. A refurbished tank will cost less, but if it features new paint and new valves, this can last you for many years and save quite a bit of money. In some areas, you can even have your tank placed underground. Typically, only larger 500-gallon and 1,000-gallon propane tanks are buried, but if many people prefer it to having an above-ground tank. You also can consider if you wish to purchase more than one tank.

Stockpiling is always a good idea for the prepper, and this is true if you are stockpiling food, supplies or propane. Stockpiling is also a good idea for those who reside in an area that can be difficult to access during certain times of the year. A blizzard or severe storm can make it impossible for propane to be delivered, so having a large propane tank or tanks can be a great way to make sure that you will never run out of fuel.

Propane prices fluctuate and the prices tend to be much higher from about October to March, when the weather is cooler. If you have a larger tank, you can purchase a large amount of propane in July or August or whenever the propane price per gallon is very low, and this can help you save money and ensure that you have plenty of propane on hand. As with other prepping supplies, stocking up with propane is always a smart tactic to consider.

Aside from buying when propane prices are low and shopping around for a good deal on propane tank prices, the type of propane you buy also matters. When you interview propane delivery companies, ask if they sell HD-5 propane or HD-10 propane. HD-5 propane is the type that you really want to purchase because it is a purer type of propane and simply burns more efficiently. Also, some companies will alert customers when propane prices go down or are about to go up, so make sure you are on the company email list.
