Discover Mosquito Lagoon With New Smyrna Beach Charter Option

Discover Mosquito Lagoon With New Smyrna Beach Charter Option

by Guy Stannard

East Central Florida is home to some of the United States' most amazing and versatile options for anglers to enjoy. Whether one's preference is freshwater, saltwater, or brackish, it can be found here. Taking a Daytona Beach fishing charter is the most effective way to fully experience each of these incredible options.

Several special qualities contribute to this area of Florida being a unique location. A favorite spot among avid anglers, beginning fishermen, tourists and locals, alike, is the amazing Mosquito Lagoon. Its positioning in Volusia Counnty at the northern part of the Indian River is a huge factor in creating its specific appeal.

This lagoon is part of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, as well as the Canaveral National Seashore. Combined, these two parks equal over 167,000 acres of land that is protected from the intrusion of development, resulting in one of the few areas of Florida that are still relatively untouched. This is why the fish and wildlife are so plentiful.

The unique conditions of this region work together to allow easy success for novices and casual fishers, yet still give the seasoned angler a sporting challenge. Due to the tidal flows, the water here moves slower, is more shallow and surprisingly clear. This makes casting easier because the fish can be seen without much effort.

Species spawn in the lagoon that would ordinarily only do this at sea because parts of it have a salinity that matches ocean conditions. It also makes this one of a few locations on Earth where one can see the extremely rare combination of Spartina, Red Mangrove and five genus of sea grass flourishing in one ecosystem. It is a gathering spot for shad, crappie, large mouth bass, spotted sea trout, grouper, flounder and tarpon.

Because of the two wildlife preserves, one has the opportunity to see amazing sights. There is a population of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that live in the lagoon. It is also possible to see schools of fish so clearly and to watch the stingrays as they swim along the shallows.
