Making The Most Of The Perfect Fort Myers Climate

Making The Most Of The Perfect Fort Myers Climate

by Jony Mozen

If there is one state in the USA that has really earned its nickname, it's Florida, the Sunshine State. It's no wonder that it's not only a popular holiday destination but also the destination of choice for those who want to live a healthier, happier outdoor lifestyle. With its many sunny days, the Fort Myers climate makes this city the perfect option if you want to enjoy the best Florida has to offer.

Fort Myers is one of the principal cities in southwest Florida. Its central location makes it the perfect base from which to explore the theme parks of Orlando, the nightlife of Miami, the Everglades and the legendary fishing and diving of the Florida Keys. It's quite a cosmopolitan place with a good mix of people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

One of the main attractions is the climate in Fort Myers. It's between subtropical and tropical and there are 271 days of sunshine in an average year. Sunscreen is important but you'll find yourself wanting to spend time outdoors even in the middle of winter. In fact, Harvey Firestone, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison all had winter estates here and today the city is home to countless professional athletes.

The spring weather in Fort Myers is perfect for the beach. Temperatures reach the upper eighties but the humidity levels are still comfortable and you won't experience too much rainfall. The Minnesota Twins have their spring training at a local stadium, as do the Boston Red Sox. A great alternative to catching a ball game or trying your hand at water sports is to see the butterflies of the Butterfly Estates.

The Fort Myers weather becomes very humid and hot in summer, with average high temperatures well into the nineties. Rain is much more frequent but generally a shower or thunderstorm is over quickly and actually brings down temperatures to more comfortable levels. However, hurricanes can affect the area and you should always heed the storm warnings if you're thinking of being on boat.

The cooler months are perfect for outdoor pursuits such as golfing, biking or hiking. This is the dry season, which means that humidity levels are much more comfortable too. Maximum temperatures hover in the upper seventies or so but at night, the temperature rarely drops to below 50 degrees. It's a good season to visit the winter estates of Edison and Ford to see just why they preferred Florida this time of year.

The city has every facility you can dream of, with plenty of restaurants and bars, especially along the waterfront in the downtown area. On those days when you want to give your skin a rest from the sun's rays, you'll find a good selection of retail outlets, among them the Edison Mall. Another good way to spend a day is with a visit to the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium or to the Imaginarium Science Center. Public transport is good and you'll also find that this is a very bicycle-friendly city.

The nearest airport is the Southwest Florida International Airport, which has connections to destinations all over the USA as well as international destinations. Accommodation options are plentiful too, with something for every budget. If you decide to invest in property here, simply call in at one of the many local real-estate agents.
