How To Choose The Perfect Major
For the indecisive person, choosing a college major could be the bane of their existence. The pressure of choosing a life path by committing to a single, focused line of study for the next four-odd years of their life can be maddening. It can be difficult to choose one major from a list of two-hundred with just a few lines of description to go off of. There are a few things to consider when making this decision that should help ease the pain of grown-up decision making.
First, cross out the things you know you will hate. Sometimes it's easier to identify things you hate over things you like. A loathing for math should cancel out any engineering, physics, statistics, economics, or accounting degrees. That should narrow down the field considerably. If, however, you don't hate anything, don't worry. There are plenty of other things you can do to narrow down the field.
There are a number of reasons for that. One of the biggest seems to be because companies aren't setting and tracking goals that would tell them how their social media is actually doing.
Wanting to be an astronaut could mean you are interested in discovery and the unknown. This could lead you towards budding fields that offer such mystery. Wanting to be a firefighter as a kid might mean you like to help people. Majors that have such goals like pre-med, physical therapy, public health, or social work could all be good fits for you.
While pay rates can differ between companies and industries, the fact remains that having a bachelor's degree will often increase the amount of money you can earn. Pay rates (like hiring) are also determined by employees' value and worth to the company, and a bachelor's degree represents years of additional learning and experience that can help the business. This means more money. Also important is the fact that during the economic downturn those with bachelor's degrees saw their wages decrease less than those with only a high school diploma.
Do you know these things? What is it exactly that you want to accomplish here? Perhaps you want to build awareness of your brand. Are you implementing strategies to get more likes. Are you running a brand awareness campaign and asking people to talk about you? If you are, you need to be tracking those items.
Track down a student or two in the major and ask them what they like and don't like about the major. Professors are often willing to share syllabuses of their classes so you can gain a detailed insight into the classes you will be taking.
Finally, remember that this is your decision. Consider the advice of parents and friends, but don't let outside pressures dictate your choice. While it is true that some majors will lead you to more pay, prestige, or stable jobs, it is also true that each major has something valuable. So whether you graduated with a healthcare administration degree or a business degree, you can be glad you picked the major that was meant for you.
