Cleaning Your Car's Upholstery

Cleaning Your Car's Upholstery

by Cornelius Nunev

Your vehicle's upholstery will become dirty by everyday dirt, food, smoke, sweat and other liquids, sprays, powders and salves. Constant contact with the blazing sun only makes things worse. Here's the best way to clean your car's upholstery so that you won't be embarrassed for your date to see just how terrible you are when you're cruising by yourself.

Automobiles are for driving

Whenever you are attempting to keep your vehicle clean, you should stay away from doing anything other than driving in the automobile. The automobile needs your full attention, or you can take a break to get something such as food if you have to. This will keep your car much cleaner.

Every little thing needs vacuumed

You have to have a day-to-day washing routine with your home, and your car should not be any different. If you use a vacuum in the car regularly, it will lift the upholstery fibers which make it harder for grime to set in later on. Vacuum the mats separately from the rest of the vehicle and make sure you get under the mats. You can use different vacuum parts to make sure that you get all the small places in the car.

It is totally worth forking out the cash to get certain spot repellents that will shield your upholstery. They are costly, but they can defend your carpet. One good example is Scotchguard.

Get leather solution

One nice thing about leather is that it is water resistant usually. That means a spill will not seep through as long as you look after it right away. All you need is a damp cloth and you can clean anything. Do not use leather-cleaning goods unless you have a more severe spot. In fact, you can get away with just water unless you spill something such as ink or nail polish.

Dealing with rubber and vinyl

When taking care of rubber and vinyl upholstery surfaces, you might want to invest in interior protectant since both get damaged in the sun effortlessly. You may want specialty cleaners as well. For those who have some baking soda around, you can put it on a damp rag to clean vinyl. Do not forget to rinse with dishwashing detergent and water after that though. It is a homemade remedy to help.

A couple of extras

Use cool water to dilute coffee spills. Soak in glass cleaner and blot dry after 5 minutes if the stain does not go away

Let greasy stains sit in paint thinner and salt or cornmeal overnight and then vacuum the area. Make sure you test it in a different area first

Ink stains come right out with hairspray or salt

Getting rid of vomit does not have to be difficult. Just put club soda or baking soda on it to dilute the acids in it

Mix laundry starch and cold water to cover blood. After letting it dry, you can vacuum it away

Cold water is used on alcohol spills

Brighten fading carpet by first vacuuming, then sponging it lightly with clear ammonia and water. The mixture is a half-cup of ammonia to one pint of water. Note: Don't use ammonia on wool carpet

Use Borax on smelly carpet upholstery. Let it sit for an hour, then vacuum. A second application will kill fleas and flea eggs

Spray the carpet with a mixture of five parts water and one part liquid fabric softener. This will get rid of static

Use iron on low heat over a damp towel to get rid of carpet imprints. The iron can melt things if it sits for very long, so stay away from that

Use liquid shoe wax polish on your car mats to keep them looking new
